McAfee managed to create a huge breakdown on 22nd of April 2010 to computers having its software installed. A wrong update sent to the companies’ computer by McAfee considered one vital file of Windows as being harmful software. This made the computers quarantine (delete) the file and as result make them start rebooting because of making the operating system unstable. Intel was one of the companies hit by that mistake. It is estimated that hundreds of thousand of computers were influenced by the wrong update.
McAfee released another update right after the wrong one, it didn’t manage to correct the problem in time though. The companies would never expect a security risk from a security related company. Even hospitals’ computers broke down because of the update. This is off course one case of risk transferability from the company producing software to the company using the software. It also raises concerns on the extend to which companies like McAfee can cause a breakdown to computers networks, and the power they have over the companies the serve.
